Taxis might not be the first thing that come to mind when you think of Los Angeles, but it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the City of Angels has its own cool mix of cabbies behind the wheel.
Still, Lonnie “Wisefool the Cab Driver” McCreery wouldn’t be your average hack in any city.
Voted ‘Best Taxi Driver’ by the LA Weekly in 2009, Mr. McCreery has transformed his vehicle into a “mobile recording studio for spoken-word poets, rappers and any fare who has the freestyle skills to get on the mic.”
A musician himself, Mr. McCreery decided to build his studio on wheels after realizing that hacking was leaving him little time to work on his own sonic creations.
According to the LA Weekly, he’s equipped Taxi No. 3502 with microphones, a laptop and Pro-Tools, all powered through the cab’s cigarette-lighter converter. He doesn’t just record his own stuff: some of underground hip-hop’s best artists have performed in his taxi, and he captures them on camera as part of his “Off the Meter” video series.
“If you’ve got what it takes to lay down a track while cabbing through L.A.,” says the Weekly, “Then ‘Wisefool the Cab Driver’ has you covered, seven days a week: (213) 858-3786.”
